Commonly Asked Questions
Who is the retreat for?
The retreat is for either mothers, fathers, or couples who have lost a child at any age for any reason.
The retreat is led by parents who have lost a child; however, retreat leaders are not professionals with degrees in counseling, psychology, or psychiatry. Retreatants are encouraged, but not required, to join for whole group discussions and activities.
What can I expect on the retreat?
The weekend will include whole group discussion and activities, as well as opportunities for individual time for journaling and self reflection. Whole group discussions are initiated by bereaved parents who invite retreatants to share their family’s story and honor their child. Topics include honoring your child’s memory, letting go of regret and guilt, how to find gratitude in daily life, and the changing relationship with your spouse and surviving children.
Group activities may include yoga and sound bathing sessions, memorial projects, trust activities, poetry and song readings, and sharing of helpful resources. There will be individual time where retreatants can explore the 33 acre seaside property (which includes a private beach, labyrinth and walking trails), journaling (journals will be provided), and quiet reflection.
Is there a cost for attending a retreat?
There is a $150 fee to reserve a spot for a Kindred Herd retreat; retreatants will be refunded $100 of that deposit upon arrival at the retreat. The remaining $50 covers materials. If a retreaten cancels their reservation within two weeks of the retreat date, they will forfeit the full $150 deposit.
What are the hours of the retreat?
The retreat begins at 5pm on Friday with an introduction and dinner and finishes Sunday with lunch.
What are the accommodations and meals?
Retreatants will stay in individual rooms with private baths (showers) in the main retreat house. Some rooms may have a balcony that overlooks the private beach. Group activities will be held in a private meeting room.
The retreat begins with Friday dinner and ends with lunch on Sunday, and includes all meals in between and snacks and coffee/tea/water throughout the day. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the communal dining room in the main retreat house. Retreatants are asked not to bring any snacks with nuts.
Note: There may be other retreats scheduled in the main retreat house; all bedrooms can be locked and meeting spaces are reserved and private. The retreat house is handicap accessible and some rooms have handicap accessibility.
Is transportation provided?
No transportation is provided to the retreat house, but we can assist in connecting people for carpooling or ride sharing. There is plenty of outdoor parking for retreatens who drive to the retreat center.
If you are planning to fly to the area, we strongly advise flying into Tweed New Haven Airport (less than a half hour to the retreat house) or Bradley International Airport in Windsor, Connecticut (about an hour from the retreat house).
What is the cancellation policy?
We ask that retreatants cancel at last two or more weeks before the retreat date to receive their deposit back. If an emergency arises last minute, we will make every effort to accommodate the situation.
